Watercolors for beginners

This budget-friendly brush set includes 4 sizes to experiment with and take your techniques to the next level. They also are synthetic. You may want to be mindful that many brushes are made with animal products.

This 12-tube paint set is the same one we use in our classes! These pigments are strong and bright, and a little paint goes a long way-making this set a worthwhile investment. Use the 12 basic colors included in the kit as starting points to mix and develop your own color pallet.

Using the wrong paper can result in soggy paintings and a disappointing outcome for your pieces. Computer paper is fine for when you’re playing around, but make sure to use a heavy watercolor paper for your final products. Canson and Strathmore are reliable brands that won’t break the bank. Some chain art supply stores like Michael’s have these on sale fairly often and will let you use coupons.

Spice up your new paintings with a splash of gold. You can water this gold paint down to layer, blend or add a hint of shimmer to your favorite shades and shapes. A tiny bit goes a long way here, so this tube will last you a while.

Gel pens are a great tool to add the perfect finishing touch to your abstract pieces. Use gel pens to add outlines, borders, geometric designs, patterns such as polka dots, leopard spots or stripes, and whatever else you can draw to add another dimension to your works and make each piece uniquely yours.
